WWE: Extreme Rules June 7 2009
Tonight’s Extreme Rules PPV looks like very much like Backlash and Judgement Day with an Extreme twist. Before I say that this event could go either way, I must admit the quality of the last two WWE PPV’s has exceeded my expectations.
Here is a rundown of the card (as posted on wwe.com)
WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. Batista (Steel Cage Match)
World Heavyweight Champion Edge vs. Jeff Hardy (Ladder Match)
John Cena vs. Big Show (Submission Match)
ECW Champion Christian vs. Jack Swagger vs. Tommy Dreamer (Triple Threat Hardcore Rules Match)
Intercontinental Champion Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho (No Holds Barred Match)
United States Champion Kofi Kingston vs. MVP vs. William Regal vs. Matt Hardy (Fatal Four Way Match)
CM Punk vs. Umaga (Samoan Strap Match)
Miss WrestleMania Vickie Guerrero vs. Santina Marella (Hog Pen Match)
Ok, five of these matches were billed on Judgement day (Mysterio vs Y2J, Orton vs Batista, Punk vs Umaga, Hardy vs Edge and Cena vs Show, they just lacked the extreme rules that will be applied tonight). Hopefully this will be the last we see of these aging feuds. With that said, it does look like a pretty solid card. I expect Edge and Hardy to steel the show but parts under card looks pretty solid as well.
Jericho and Mysterio worked wonders with the basic “will he hit the 619” angle they used at Judgement day. The feud has been heating up and the No Holds Barred stipulation, along with Jericho’s promise to de-mask Rey, should make an entertaining match.
Batista and Orton was a bit of a let-down at Judgement Day and if recent episodes of Raw are anything to go by, not even a steel cage will save this feud from bombing. I expect Orton to retain the belt and go on to fight H.H.H in a cell at Summerslam.
Punk and Umaga will be a good match despite the useless strap match stipulation. I hate strap matches.
The Fatal Four Way should be blinding. I am really looking forward to it and despite the awful Raws of the last few weeks, the relationships between these four have really shone on the weaker WWE flagship show. I hope Kofi retains the belt.
Swagger, Dreamer and Christian. Anything can happen with this, I’m going with an ……… It was everything I expected outcome.
Cena and Show in a Submission Match……Jesus Christ………I would rather watch Santino and Vikki in a Hog Pen match and reserve my tea making and piss break for the snore fest these two will put on.
The show has potential, of course WWE’s extreme PPV’s will never get as good, gritty and raw as the one night stands of 05 and 06, but still, we have to take what they throw at us. I’m going to predict that this will be a show that generates mixed reviews.
Discuss it here with the best wrestling community on the net.

- Predictions:
- Orton wins
- Edge wins (Hardy is taking a break, so I don’t expect him to win the title)
- Cena wins (With all the build up around the question if Cena can put Big Show in the STFU, how can it go otherwise…)
- Dreamer wins (Anything can happen, but I’d like Dreamer to stay on ECW)
- Jericho wins (Maybe the hardest prediction I had to make, since everything points towards Rey defeating Jericho…. Still I’m going with Jericho winning since that’s going to make him the unprecedented 9 time IC champ. And keep the mask ON Rey…..)
- Kofi wins (He just won the title, so I’ll pick Kofi to retain)
- CM Punk wins
Also perhaps Christian will loose the ECW title and later on interfere in the Edge Hardy match like the plan was for the Rumble
i feel tonight is thanks for the memories Dreamer, but no fairytale extension.
d-love, I think you meant to say you think, not feel.
Anyway, 3 of these matches have no stipulations, ugh. The matches will be good, aside from the Cena/Big show match. Expect HHH to return at the end of the cage match.
First off, what an unimaginative PPV Name.
Vickie VS. Santina: we all lose.
Punk VS. You-Manga: Punk wins, Umaga doesn’t need a win here to remain a mid-card monster.
US Title: MVP needs this win more than the others.
IC: Jericho picks up the win ultra-heel style.
ECW: Dreamer gets an emotional win then drops the title 2 minutes later to Justin Credible.
Cena VS. Show: Superman
Edge VS. Hardy: Edge
Orton VS. Batista: Batista wins, but is injured. Next live show Orton gets his rematch and completely destroys the injured Batista with the help of outside interference.
Would you believe I actually ordered this show?
Lex, it might be fun for a match or two.
Lex how you been man? I don’t think you will order this show!
Lex has no will power! lol
Hey, with all the Justin.tv nonsense, no wwe streams for me. If someone’s got one, if they could email metsmaniax2k3@yahoo.com, that would be sick. If i get deleted/banned for this, oh well, but i need me some extreme rules
DDT – Reload this page and check out the original post again. I’ll delete the stream, and this comment after the show.
Dear Rey Mysterio, You were unmasked for like 2 years in WCW we know what you look like there’s no need to cover your face.
Uh, did Golddust just out right say the word “shit” during WWE’s new family friendly programing.
CM Punk heel turn or just opportunistic babyface?
i say heel turn
I would think heel turn, sideshow. He was kind of acting like a douche after his title win. Plus, taking advantage of Hardy like that will piss off the fans. Let’s hope he cuts a heelish promo on Smackdown this week. Face CM Punk bores me, but heel CM Punk might just do the trick.
I do think it kind of sucks to have Hardy and Edge go through a match like that only to see the outcome erased in 30 seconds, but still, heck of a ladder match. A couple of really sick spots. I couldn’t believe it when Hardy slammed Edge stomach-first onto the hinge parts of the ladder. That had to hurt. And then of course both of them falling off the ladder onto the ladder at ringside was nuts, too. I’m just glad they didn’t use those REALLLY tall ladders on stage. I think that would have been a bad idea.
Oh, and not TOO bad of a PPV. I felt like I got my money’s worth on the ladder match, the ending and the Jericho/Mysterio match.
Not sure why Orton/Batista was so short, though. Maybe they’ve figured out that those two don’t work well together?
And what the heck is the point of a cage match these days in the WWE? It’s become so watered down and boring. At this point, I’d rather see a one-on-one match. I hate the whole “escape the cage” thing, because the heel spends the entire match trying to climb out or leave through the door, while the face always goes for the pin. So predictable. The entire point of the cage match is to keep them IN the ring and away from interference.
Wow a lot of things going down tonight…new IC, WH, ECW, and WWE champions.
Let me be the first to say it on here, Cena/Show had to be the worst match of the year so far, not counting 3 or 4 minute Raw matches.
Also, the ending didn’t even make sense, Big Show’s entire lower half was sticking out of the ring, why didn’t the ref break up the submission?
I guess WWE Management likes Tommy Dreamer more than Heyman did because the screw-job finish happened to Jeff Hardy and not him. Niiice. Lex, I agree, Punk needs a nice heel turn and this is perfect.
Will Orton regain his title the first chance he gets? I think so.
What’s next for Superman Cena? How about Umaga again? Or Khali again? Or, what the Hell, let’s have him just continue against Big Show for the rest of his career. Big Show has almost turned into another Kane and Kane is already to WWE what Abyss is to TNA.
Hardy needs a title run – CM Punk has the most boring matches he needs to change things up – Short hair Jerico is horrible as a heel – Batista as champ is played out already- wwe needs new blood in the title picture
According to sources, Batista is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday morning for a torn biceps muscle that he sustained in a match prior to his bout with Randy Orton at “Extreme Rules” last night. The injury was likely the reason the match only lasted just over seven minutes.
Why the company decided to go through with the title change despite the injury is still a question mark, although one would assume the reason will be revealed in the storyline going forward.
Expect an injury angle or something done on RAW tonight to get the title off of Batista, as he’ll be undergoing surgery the next morning and be on the shelf as far as being an active in-ring competitor.
so faces over in every match bar one. WWE in a nutshell right there.
indeed dynamite shenanigans i say minus the Jericho match pretty much all faces won which like u say is bull shit
Good PPV, some silly parts but the ladder match and Rey/Y2J match more than made up for that. Loved the Punk swerve at the end, great to see him finally turn heel. Hopefully they won’t have him do a face promo to cancel out the turn like they did when Batista turned on Taker, I want to see a heel Punk and none of his young and female fans will cheer him after he screwed Jeff anyway.
Also great to see Dreamer get the title, a nice gesture as his career is winding down, even though it means Christian didn’t hold the belt long.
A few too many title changes for my liking, the Batista-Orton match was pointless and further devalued the WWE title and the steel cage match type. Hopefully Randy will get the belt back soon now that Batista is injured yet again though I don’t know why they never have him beat Batista, it makes Orton look weak.
DK. Jmart, don’t forget Punk’s heelish win. Mind you they could easily have had Orton go over Batista in a long cage match only to get beat by Punk directly after and kept him face.
David, I think Christian’s about to move up a notch in the world and end up on either Raw or Smackdown, perhaps with Edge and Christian’s respective title losses will lead to the reunion of the tag team.
As for Batista, I agree 100%. They’re booking Orton like they book Jericho in his run as Unified World Title Holder. Why can’t we have a heel whose good at his job anymore? Aside from Triple H, Kurt Angle, The Rock and Undertaker I can’t think of too many instances of heels being booked as top competitors.
smackdown’s going to be hurting for some faces i think, maybe thats a place for christian.
Umaga has just been fired…
-Edge might turn face while divorcing with Vickie
-Look like Knox or Dolph will take Umaga’s spot.
-I wanted Christian to come out and help Edge in the ladder match……
