UFC: 99 “The Comeback” (13th June 09)

ufc_99Tonights UFC pay per view is the first to be held in Germany, and therefore will be starting within an hour of this post going on!

The full rundown of the card is as follows:

  • Rich Franklin vs Wanderlei Silva
  • Cheick Kongo vs Cain Velasquez
  • Mirko Cro Cop vs Mostapha Al Turk
  • Mike Swick vs Ben Saunders
  • Spencer Fisher vs Caol Uno
  • Marcus Davis vs Dan Hardy

Although I am not as excited about this card as I will be to see Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar on the next PPV, I can see this being a good, entertaining show. I can't pick a clear winner for most of the matches, but as a huge Cro - Cop fan I am really hoping to see a "highlight-reel" knock out from the Croatian. I think if he can climb back up the ladder then the UFC will finaly make some money from him.

I can't pick a winner between the Kongo / Velasquez match, bujt if I had to choose then I would go with Velasquez. Kongo usually struggles with wrestlers and Velasquez is one hell of a good wrestler.

The Marcus Davis and Dan Hardy war of words should provide a great fight. I love MMA for the technical aspect of the matches, but every now and then its great to see a good old fasioned fight between two people that hate each others guts.

In the main event, again I can't pick a winner. All I know is that these two fighters are esentailly fighing for their MMA carrers. I can see this being a bloody war between two hard and quick fighters which neither will quit.

I have a feeling that the PPV is shown live over here but on a taped delay around the world, so I don't know how well the live discussion will go. Feel free to discuss UFC 99 here though.

Oh yeah..... watch out for Caol Uno!

Mixed card, Franklin-Silva was an awesome fight that could have gone either way, as was Hardy-Davis, though it was refreshing to see a fighter rewarded by the judges for damage over control and Cain Velasquez destroyed my least favourite HW Kongo, which was great to see. Cain and Carwin as well as Lesnar are the future of the HW division and I think Brock will struggle to beat both of those guys.

Cro Cop would have won with or without the eye poke but it was an anticlimax considering he’s gone back to Dream to fight cans and duck Overreem.

Saunders was disappointing, I was expecting him to give Swick a tougher fight but Quick Swick now has to be taken seriously as a WW contender and Uno-Fisher was a stalemate though I’m suprised Fisher got the nod, I felt the last flurry would have earned him the win.

Shame we got no prelims, as a few of them fights sounded pretty good but I got a mate of mine into MMA after the Franklin-Silva fight, win or lose Wandi always delivers excitement and that fight won him my mate as a fan.
