UFC: 100

ufc100I am so pumped for UFC 100. It has the big fight feel to the main event as well as the huge international show feel to it that a Wrestlemania can bring. I don't think that I have ever been more excited for an MMA show.

Being a life long wrestling fan, I loved it when the rumours circulated that Brock Lesnar was training for MMA. He was a monster heel in WWE and could wrestle really well. Wrestling fans knew that he was extremely athletically gifted and I thought that he could grind through the MMA ranks. The drawing power that he brought to the table was too much for Dana to resist though and after just one MMA fight, he brought him in to the UFC for a match with Frank Mir.

I thought at the time that it was a bad fight for Lesnar. Being so inexperienced, we all knew that he would use his size and wrestling skills as a base against Mir. However Frank Mir had world class jujitsu skills which at his level, can counter wrestling ability. Also he has faced people much larger than himself in the past (infact he snapped Tim Sylvias forearm in half) so had all the tools to take Lesnar to school and send him straight out of MMA as quick as he started. I also thought that as Frank Mir was making yet another return to the UFC, this was a lose - lose situation for Brock. At the end of the day, if he lost then he would be forgotten about, if he won then it would be a very unimpressive Frank Mir that hadn't found his form of the days before his motorcycle accident.

However, they both looked like world beaters. Lesnar totally dominated Frank Mir for a minute and thirty seconds, before Mir saw a split second opportunity to apply an ankle lock to Lesnar for the tap. Mir was back in business. He took an absolute beating that I really believe most heavyweights would have been knocked out from. He kept his cool, took the punches, and waited for his chance. He knew Lesnar would make a mistake and when he did he knew he would capitalise on it. He can come across as a bit of a jock, but Frank Mir proved that he is still one of the best true martial artists in the game.

Although Lesnar lost, he proved that he was for real. His ground and pound really was devastating and relentless. He happened to hit Mir in the back of the head and the referee made one of the dumbest calls I had ever seen by deducting a point for Brock but more importantly, standing them up and stopping an awesome barrage of punches by Lesnar that seemed to be winning the fight.

We will never know what would have happened had Steve Mazzagatti not made that ridicules decision.

Lesnar went on to completely demolish Heath Herring before giving Randy Couture his first loss since Chuck Liddell at UFC 57. Mir became the first man to stop Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in his career in probably his best performance ever.

I wanted Lesnar to shut the MMA fans up who bitched about a "fake wrestler" in the UFC. Today he is the man, and a convincing win over Mir puts him up there in the top few heavyweights in the world. However I'd like to see Mir come back from his accident and really show us just how good he is. I'd like to see him remove all doubt that he is a legend in the sport.

I see Mir winning by some kind of a stoppage, with a TKO not being out of the question.

I also see Thiago Alves winning by a decision over George St-Pierre. As good as GSP is, I think that this weekend belongs to Alves.

Another match that I am busting to see is Henderson against Bisping. Being British, I want to see "The Count" get the win and I think he will either stop Henderson late in the fight or he will squeeze out a decision.

I think that Bonner vs Coleman will be fight of the night. Both men need a win desperately and they can both turn the heat up when needed.

I've put this post up early because it is such a big show for the UFC so feel free to discuss UFC 100 here.

  1. jmart

if alves makes weight i will be shocked

  2. Bruno28

The weigh-in was yesterday and alves already made weight at 170 lbs, so was GSP.

  3. jmart

then rush may be in trouble

  4. The Gooser

I guarantee he is a lot bigger than GSP right now though. Come fight time I think he will have at least ten pounds on him.

  5. js

GSP has said to Canadian media that he will be coming in roughly 185-187 lbs tonight.

  6. Pole Foam

    The Gooser,
    Impressive post!

  7. The Gooser

Polefoam – Ha ha thanks. It was about three times longer but I found it was mainly jibbering!

  8. Joe Morgan

I ordered it and will be watching intently

  9. The Gooser

The prelims are underway and some results are in. So far Shannon Gugerty has choked out Matt Grice in the first round, Tom Lawlor has guillotined CB Dollaway unconscious, and Dong Hyun Kim wins 30-26 from all three judges against TJ Grant.

  10. The Gooser

Jon Jones makes Jake O’Brien tap out in the second round. Man I’m excited about this Jon Jones.

  11. The Gooser

We got a freebie here in the UK Joe. I’m pumped about the show, I just wonder if it can possibly live up to the hype.

  12. The Gooser

Mac Danzig has lost a unanimous decision to Jim Miller. Apparently it was a good fight with Miller getting saved by the bell at the end of round two and three. Danzig has lost three in a row now, which is a shame as he looked like such a promising star during the Ultimate Fighter season that he won.

  13. The Gooser

Coleman beats Bonner and the show is underway.

UFC….. please update that opening music

  14. js

and we have our first groin kick of the evening…

  15. The Gooser

js – It looked like it really hurt too!

  16. The Gooser

Belcher loses to Akiyama by a split. I’m not sure it was a robbery like Joe Rogan said but I do think Belcher won the fight. Good match though.

  17. js

I disagree was a very close fight but I saw it going against Alan

  18. js

TG – Are you watching the dressing room cams on UFC.com?

  19. The Gooser

    no I can’t find them.

  20. js

btw, Are you susprised The Count – Hendo is going on before Fitch’s bout? My prediction Hendo TKO RD 2

  21. The Gooser

didn’t they do the same with Hendo – Rampage?

    Bisping looks shakey

  22. js

    Nope main event UFC 75

  23. The Gooser

Yeah I just checked on wiki. I forget which event it was but I was surprised what match they had on second. Henderson is gonna land a monster any minuete. lol. I can just feel it coming.

  24. The Gooser

    WOW…..

    …. there it was!

  25. js

Bisping with a take… oh wait lol

  26. js

You could sense it with the amount of miles Bisping was putting in. That was brutal!
P.S. I nearly nailed my prediction.
Fitch will win the next fight via UD

  27. js

I’m sorry Jon Fitch, but in no just world does a GSP fight deserve to go on before your wrestlefest.

  28. The Gooser

I think this match will be fight of the night. And I think GSP is in danger of being de-crowned here.

  29. js

I agree, this will be FOTN, btw the bonuses for KOOTN, SOTN and FOTN are 100 000 each. Any guy with Alves size and strength poses a serious threat and I must admit I’m worried about the same thing. Being Canadian however, I have to pull for my guy GSP TKO RD 4

  30. The Gooser

100,000 each? That’s a nice payday for hendo:)

  31. Joe Morgan

Bisbing got KTFO. He diserved it too. I think he needs to rethink what he does and how it effects opponents

  32. js

GSP looking good with the takedowns in the early going…, but you can see how strong Alves is.

  33. js

    The champ smells blood!

  34. js

That was a scary good performance by GSP, even more so against a guy of Alves’s talent.

  35. The Gooser

    Brock looked confused walking in!

    HERE WE GO!

  36. js

It’s all OVER! Lesnar wins by TKO RD 2

  37. The Gooser

I love the heel promo at the end.

  38. Joe Morgan

Brock just made wrestling fans look classless and trashy. Even if you don’t care about what the fans think you need to premote your fight and try not to look like a giant spoiled baby. And how redneck was the “I might mount my wife” comment? This guy is low class and puts a black eye on both pro wrestling and MMA. Leave the “Heel Promo” bullshit in the fake wrestling world. In real life where you are selling yourself it just hurts the business. This is MMA and someone hopefully soon will break this guy’s jaw.
What a low rent clown. No wonder I stopped watching the WWE during his lackluster run.

  39. The Gooser

Joe, I disagree with you. I think that Lesnar has a unique selling point, in that people really want to see him lose now. People say all the time that it isn’t wrestling, but it is often sold the same way.

    Brock is now a heel.

  40. Joe Morgan

Being a “heel” in fake wrestling is benificial to the sport due to the fact that is mostly accepted. MMA by contrast has REAL critics here in the US and is on the border of the mainstream. There are still those that would like to picture it as barbarrick and crude. Lesnar is just adding fuel to the fire of those anti MMA critics. I tune into MMA to see great fights and talent in the peak combat sport. I tune into fake wrestling to see the theatre of comedy and tragedy that it is. I do not appreicate some douche making an ass of himself. That’s not entertaining. It is classless. He has been an assclown the entire premotion and like I said before this is the UFC and someone WILL embarrass you I just hope he remembers tonight. The funny part is that I hate Frank Mir as a fighter.

  41. Arron

At this point Joe, I can only see Lesnar helping the sport of MMA.

He will bring in new fans and everyone will dish down their 54.95 to see what the hell Lesnar will do or say next.

People don’t like Lesnar b/c he is bigger stronger and faster than everyone.

Deal with it. Lesnar is the best heavyweight in the world right now. Don’t even mention Fedor, look how his last opponents have fallen off the map.

Lesnar is a very smart businessman, he knows that if he sells himself as the bad guy, then people will want to see him lose.

“Whether you like it, or whether you don’t like it, it’s the best thing going today.”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“To be the man, you got to beat the man”

    Today Lesnar was the man.

  42. Joe Morgan

Lesnar being top dog dosent change the fact that that showing was low rent and immature. Aaron you of all people should know that embarassmant is one right hand away in MMA.

  43. Kanadian

why should mma be so self conscious about what its critics think. it has been growing in popularity exponentially in recent years, the fact that a few dinosaurs think it is “barbaric” does not change the fact that it is a phenomenon that is now more mainstream than many sports given the title of “mainstream”. Its gotten to where it is being what it is, not trying to be something its not. That said, I’m not going to pretend to know a lot about mma, I don’t even enjoy it most of the time unless I’m with company with a few beers; I do know that I will watch UFC if lesnar is on. is that only because I’m a wrestling fan? maybe, but i sure thought that fight tonight was a heel of a ride, and i dug that interview at the end (i don’t believe it was a heel promo so much as it was what lesnar actually feels). Pending the buyrate, i would suggest Brock Lesnar is a huge star, the biggest in the UFC and MMA. I would also suggest that having a star who is an asshole does not result in supporting the idea that the sport is barbaric.

  44. Joe Morgan, I COMPLETELY disagree.

Tyson was a heel. Ali was a heel. Shaq was a joking face. Rasheed Wallace was a shitty low class heel. Mayweather is an arrogant heel. Couture is a face. GSP is a face.

WHAT IS YOUR POINT? Sports are half entertainment, you know.

  45. Scratch that. Ali was a lovable Heel, like Edge.

He is selling tickets, besides Mir was talking too much shit before the fight.

  46. David

Lesnar looked awesome last night, he completely dominated Mir and showed a lot of improvement in his submission defence as well as his intelligence as a fighter, like the Couture fight he fought more methodically and it worked perfectly. Pinning down Mir’s arm was smart and it remineded me of how Hughes nullified BJ’s BJJ in their rematch. Lesnar’s post-fight antics won’t have helped the sports credibility but it was entertaining and made him the star of the show, he’s the new Tito aka a guy who you either love or hate and you buy PPVs to see him win or lose. Fedor is a better fighter (Arron after the beatings he gave to Sylvia and Arlovski it broke them, that’s why they are in decline now) but if Brock continues to improve then he could be the one to dethrone Fedor.

GSP is amazing, he is right up there with Fedor as the best P4P now, his wrestling is just too good. Alves is a monster with excellent takedown defence but GSP humbled him, a world-class performance from the UFC’s best ever WW (move over Hughes), unfortuantely he is too good for WW and his only competetive fights will be at MW.

  47. The Gooser

  50. Paulo Thiago – $8,000, TJ Grant – $5,000, Matt Grice – $7,000 and Frank Mir – $45,000 are getting ripped off by Dana.
