Summerslam 2009
For years Summerslam was the Wrestlemania of the summer. The history of the event runs right back to the middle of the Hogan - Andre feud in 1988. The event was once regarded to many of the fans as being the second biggest show of the year, and the show quality lived up to our expectations.
Over the last decade or so, The Royal Rumble has over taken Summerslam for the number two show of the year, and there is a case to say that No Way Out is now in third.
I hate to come across as negative, but I think that this years Summerslam could have been built up a lot better with what the had. But regardless, the Staples Center in LA tonight is the venue for Summerslam 2009.
Randy Orton defends the title against John Cena in the Raw main event. I'm not too sure what they can do that hasn't already been done on our TV's but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
The Smackdown main event has all the makings of a Sumerslam classic as Jeff Hardy defends the title against CM Punk in a tables, ladders & chairs match. I think that CM Punk will win the match and it will put a period on the feud for now. I think this will be match of the night though.
The DX match might well annoy me and entertain me at the same time, and I'm looking forward to seeing Mysterio vs my boy Dolph Ziggler and I think that the Christian vs Regal match might well be worth a watch.
The full card is as follows:
- Randy Orton vs. John Cena in a Singles match for the WWE Championship
- Chris Jericho and The Big Show vs. Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard and JTG) in a Tag team match for the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship
- Jeff Hardy vs. C.M. Punk in a in a TLC match for the World Heavyweight Championship.
- Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler in a singles match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
- D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) vs. The Legacy (Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes) in a Tag Team match
- The Great Khali vs. Kane in a Singles Match
- Jack Swagger vs. Montel Vontavious Porter in a Singles match.
- Christian vs. William Regal in a Singles match for the ECW Championship.
PWBite King Benjamin has been at the fan axxcess and will be going to Summerslam tonight. He wrote a report on the day which included an impromptu interview with Vince McMahon. He'll write up a full Summerslam report from the live audience point of view after the show.
I won't be in the Summerslam live discussion tonight as I have some family problems to deal with right now, but feel free to discuss Summerslam 2009 here.

MVP’s best match was vs Benoit at WM 23. Now look where he is over 2 years later. He has fallen off.
Reasons:
-Smackdown team jobbing him out
-Smackdown team making him face
-Being drafted to RAW with the main eventers main eventing every RAW/PPV
the following also lead to the demise of Mr Kennedy, along with the steroid thing, injuries, “interviews thing”, and the Orton thing
MVP/Benoit at WM23 was average at best…he had a better one with him about a month later on Smackdown.
His best matches, imo, were against Matt Hardy.
MVP/Benoit it was an OK Match!
ARE YOU READY???
Please let this be worth my $5
The Original Nick–
That little program they had dragged on longer than I’d care to remember. It started out as a feud over the US title which Matt could never get, then I believe they became partners, which evolved them trying to one up one another in things like basketball.
B-O-R-I-N-G!!
yeah but they had good matches
and why did mysterio retain!!??
that mvp/hardy feud was the best thing in wrestling for a long time, and almost everyone was in agreement on this blog, negative nancy.
How can anyone complain about the Hardy-MVP feud? It elevated both guys and produced great matches and segments, as well as bring meaning to the US title. Honestly internet fans can be so critical it makes you wonder why they even bother watching.
That was a great match. Cryme Tyme looked good.
CM Punk just got a WHOLE BUNCH of heat ragging on Twilight like that…..
Allow me to make it clear, I am not one of those people that are never satisfied and always critical of anything that comes on wrestling on a Monday/Thursday night. Also let me make it clear that I do not watch Raw/Smackdown/ECW on a regular basis. Rarely do I watch any of WWE’s shows; I may at most watch 10-15 minutes of the show if I so happen to stop to watch it. Therefore, I will admit my knowledge of their fued is fragmented. The reason why I thought the fued dragged on was bc I saw them playing basketball (I’m guessing over the US Title) and then all of a sudden their tag partners, then I suppose they broke up to fued over the title again, which I’m guessing Matt didn’t ultimately win.
All you guys ordered the PPV Tonight?
I hate You DX! Always have to win, Instead of Giving Legacy the Win!
What was the Point of Having the ECW Title Match, But It Reminds me of Summerslam 2005 When Benoit Beat Orlando Jordan for the US Title.
I was pleasantly surprised by the DX/Legacy match…Legacy looked VERY good in it, probably the most entertained I have ever been by them.
and i call bullshit on the ECW match
Just got wind of the ECW match from another source.
Haha, is there a reason why Regal got played like that?
(I haven’t watched any wrestling in about 2-3 months now)
Alright Now Come on Orton Beat Super Cena!
Best match I’ve seen in a long time.
I was out of my seat each “finish” I swear that was Masters with that run in as a fan….but man that was so tight. I thought for sure this match would be boring with Cena winning, but I am impressed. Good job WWE
Well At Least Randy Orton won, So I’m Happy!
Cm Punk vs Taker should be a fantasic feud on Smackdown!
The Orton/Cena match was the most convoluted, over-booked thing Ive seen in a while…all those stops really hurt the flow of the match. Just when they were getting into a groove, they have the DQ…and then the 3 other finishes.
I think the fan attack was legit, they didn’t replay it on the video recap after the match…if it were pre-meditated and meant to be part of the match, they probably would have re-shown it.
And I’d hate to read what the IWC would say if this happened on a TNA show.
That my dear boy was a plant.
He is Ted Dibiase Sr.’s youngest son.
i think punk/taker’s matches may exceed the build up. it’ll surely be close though
Bryan Danielson has signed with WWE!!! Holy shit honestly never thought that it would actually happen!! What do you guys think??
Also, MVP is just not that fucking good! He is corny as shit, and not that impressive in the ring. Matt Hardy also, is just not that good. A solid midcard jobber, but nothing more. Height of his Charisma was V.1.0, and he has gone backward since then in terms of stick. These guys will never really get over, because they just aren’t very good. In my opinion lol. I’m open for debate.
mvp is that fucking good. all the blame is on the shitty booking of him as a face. evreytime a heel starts getting turned in recent history, WWE will take the character and remove all the interesting, likeable heel qualities they had and all the attitude they had that grew on the audience off of the character. then they take this now boring character, and make them a generic face, Cena jr. MVP is not MVP from a 2008, MVP is Bobby Lashley from 2007. Same thing happened when Carlito turned, and when Kennedy turned.
MVP/Hardy was my favorite feud since….well….HBK/Hogan? Maybe even further.
Amen, Kanadian.
According to PWInsider.com, WWE developmental star Brett DiBiase (brother of Legacy member Ted DiBiase Jr.) was the “fan” who ran-in during the Randy Orton vs. John Cena WWE title match at SummerSlam last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
DiBiase is 21 years old and is the other son of “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase (Sr.). DiBiase signed his WWE developmental deal in early 2009
Ahhh maybe he is just not my cup of tea. I can never get excited for MVP, neither as a face or heel. Maybe its his cartoonishly racist gimmick. Or maybe I can never really forgive him for his bullshit inflatable entrance.
For me personally, a wrestlers move set is my number one criteria for judgment, and nothing MVP does impresses me. Even in Indys he used the fucking crippler crossface as a finish, unoriginal. He is slow and clunky and does not seem to communicate well. And also, we give Cena two tons of shit (deserved) for the five knuckle shuffle, but at least its over. The gay thing Montel does is embarrassing to wrestling fans.
Also, they fucking worked the shit out of me last night with the “fan” run in.
And the thought of a Danielson/Punk feud tents my fruit of the looms.
how is that a racist gimmick, in ANY way? Being “the cocky sports athlete.”
Macho, moveset? Really?!!?
Are you saying that the people’s elbow was insulting? Im going to stop right here before i go on a 2 page rant.
Any one else I’ll argue with. Your an idiot.
i dont think its racist. In MVP’s wrestlecast interview he talked about how the (heel) character is just an exaggeration of himself, which is usually something that makes a good character in wrestling. I also seem to agree with JSN in the sense that I don’t really see the racial steryotypes, whether or not that’s good or bad.
On his moveset; something like that seems like it should be but a factor in determining whether or not someone can work. I think MVP is a very good worker.
If the Rock could use the People’s elbow as a finisher then MVP could use his elbow drop as a finisher, Macho.
Rocks real finisher was the rock bottom, the peoples elbow was more of a set up move
Please go on a two page rant JSN. Everyone loves reading your fucking rants.
I can’t recall a time when The Rock ever used the elbow as his finisher. And The Elbow, no matter how ridiculous, was original. Unlike Ballin.
Macho,
next
Dear Macho,

Signed Jason.
lmao jsn. pwned.
hahahahahhaHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH JSN YOU GOT ME!! I bet that felt so good to post. God. You are awesome my friend. hahhahahaha. hahahha. You made my night. I thank you.
that was dirty
i always thought of that elbow as his finisher
Just goes to show that it doesn’t matter what the move is to get the job done; whether it be an elbow, an “atomic” leg drop, or a single index finger that can bring unspeakable doom to helpless oppnonent.
