George ‘The Animal’ Steel Interview

george-steel-1I approached Hall Of Famer George Steel to answer some questions about his wrestling career, and he quickly agreed to an interview.

My approach:

George I was wondering if I could send a few questions over for you to answer. I am writing for Pro Wrestling Blog and a few of our readers would love to ask you some questions. The interview would be published on our blog, if that’s OK with you.

His reply:

Ben, no problem I would be happy to help.

Unlike my previous interviews, George couldn’t seem to find the time to answer the questions (and the questions some of you ITES wanted to ask). I have included a short answer at the end of the interview; this was the ONLY thing that he messaged me back.

You have wrestled as both a heel and as face, which do you think is harder and what did you enjoy the most throughout your career?

Who came up with the Neanderthal like character you played throughout your WWF career? And were you worried that it may not work when they decided to turn you into a face?

You have wrestled many of the greats and in the 60’s you were scouted by Bruno Samartino. Who was your all time favourite opponent and why?

In your early career you were able to cut killer promos. When you were landed with the Animal gimmick, you george-steel-2changed to a somewhat incoherent rambling. This was good for your character, but how did you feel about this style of promo considering you were pretty gifted on the mic?

You were famously involved in an angle with Randy Savage and Elizabeth. Why has the managerial role died/declined so much in today’s wrestling organisations?

What are your fondest memories of wrestling in the old Detroit territory?

You stared in Tim Burton’s film Ed Wood. Who approached you for the role, and what was it like staring in a Burton/Depp Movie?

Do you still watch wrestling today? If so who are your favourites and why?

What happens in a typical day in the life of George Steel today?

steele_george3I believe it was your wife Pat who inducted you into the Hall Of Fame in 1995. That must have been an emotional moment. What do you think of the current WWE Hall Of Fame?

You made an appearance in TNA in the summer of last year; can we expect any more on screen appearances from George Steel?

Finally, what does turnbuckle pad taste like?

I thank you for your time George,

King Benjamin

Here was his reply:

Ben you have really buried me with a bit of an over kill. What do you think I am? You are asking me to write a book. That is not going to happen my friend!!

I have never angered a WWE Hall Of Famer, then again I have never come across such a miserable one either. George has won many other awards in his time as well, here are a few that Wikipedia list:

Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards
Most Embarrassing Wrestler (1987, 1988)
Worst Feud of the Year (1987) vs. Danny Davis
Worst Tag Team (1986) with the Junkyard Dog

May I wish George all the best in his future endeavours.
