The Great Khali? Seriously?

Written by Lex on July 26th, 2008 in Uncategorized.

On my initial reading of the Smackdown spoilers this week, I thought perhaps someone had sent a fake report to all of the wrestling sites on the net. There’s no way the WWE would give the Great Khali a title shot at Summerslam, I thought to myself.

Unfortunately, the spoilers weren’t fake, and The Great Khali won Smackdown’s number one contender Battle Royal. Now we’re stuck with The Great Khali in one of the top matches at the WWE’s second-biggest PPV of the year. What are the bookers smoking?

I understand that Smackdown’s marquee match at Summerslam will be Edge v. Undertaker in Hell in a Cell. That’s a great thing and a huge positive that came out of last night’s show. But it’s not enough to squash the disappointment of Triple H wrestling the Great Khali. There should be no suspense when it comes to that match–no way Trips is laying down the belt to that guy.

So that begs a simple question: why did the powers that be book this program? Are they just trying to put a warm body in there until they figure out what to do with Triple H? Did they want to feed Triple H a lame opponent to extend his title reign? Does Triple H want to look like a giant killer on a big PPV stage? I certainly don’t know the answer, and I’m not even going to try to wrap my head around the thought process here, because it’s totally mind-boggling. It’s THE GREAT KHALI. HE’S AN INSANELY TERRIBLE.

I do know one thing, though: we’re all going to be subjected to sitting through a crappy Great Khali match at Summerslam. Let’s just hope they get it out of the way early in the show, because Summerslam has always been right up there with Wrestlemania for me, so I don’t want it ruined by the “Punjabi Nightmare.”

yeah i rather see big show vs hhh at least that will be better but i think what were getting for the smackdown matches at ss is mvp vs jeff hardy shelton vs kennedy edge geeks vs jesse and festus but i doubt they will have shelton vs kennedy but heres to wishing it!!!

Big Show v. HHH would have been great. Those two have good chemistry together–I remember the match a few years ago where Big Show had a “broken” hand. If I remember correctly, it nearly stole the show on that PPV.

I guess they are trying to keep everything even. They screw us with the Khali/Trips match. Then give us a huge present in the Edge/Taker HIAC match(which I remember wishing for a few post back somewhere).

You know they can’t make the shows too good now can they.

Khali is pretty lucky, half the talented guys cannot even get into a main event slot but untalented Khali does?

But the more scary thing is that Khali could actually win the belt again as Stephanie is about to give birth and HHH will probably want to be off tv to spend time with his new child.

  5. Lex Luthor Says:

    PF,

I had forgotten about that…that would be a horrible outcome. Are they trying to kill the ratings before they move networks or something?

  6. jmart Says:

lol they done it before and he was only champ for like 68 days haha so mabye that will lead for edge to win the belt later on in a triple threat match or something but i doubt hunter will loose

This match has me wanting to skip the PPV.

  8. Marty Says:

I really wouldn’t rule out a Jeff Hardy type beating Khali for his title opportunity. Would really give Jeff some credibility for going up against HHH should they decide to go down that path.

  9. jsnwwf Says:

big show, MVP, or Koslov would have made more sense

Khali hasnt been on TV in a while

  10. DynamiteKid Says:

ooh, we could get lucky. Khali might botch a move and fall on HHH and injure him severely.

But it won’t happen and we’ll have to suffer through HHH with that belt until wrestlemania next year, at which point Smackdown ratings will be the lowest in history. Somehow the rest of the roster will get the blame. . . .

  11. Diamond D Says:

HHH vs kozlov would kick arse.

This is WWE’s Third most EPIC FAILURE EVER. The first was SIGNING THE GREAT KHALI, THE SECOND WAS GIVING HIM A WORLD TITLE. WWE, you fail so so much right now. HELL, even TNA’s Hard Justice main Event sounds good and that’s two matches in one from VINCE RUSSO

  13. Pole Foam Says:

LL, thats the scary thing as some of the booking team does not realise that Khali kills ratings.

  14. scotlandsmvp Says:

I have to say. Imagine if Jeff Hardy got the shot and WON the title. It could be the same thing as Edge in 2006. The ratings would skyrocket because it’s someone new with the title. When Edge won it, Cena had the title for nearly a year and the ratings where dropping because of it. If Jeff won it would be the same thing. Smackdown’s ratings would rocket and WWE would be showing the CW what they are going to miss when they go.

And this is why I’ve 99.9% given up on WWE

  16. scotlandsmvp Says:

So what’s it gonna take to get the other .1 percent?

  17. 313rd Perfectionist Says:

1)Vince defeating CM Punk, Mark Henry, and Triple H in a fatal four-way ladder on a pole match winning all 3 titles with an extensive reign and then somehow getting into a faked death angle, coming back 6 months later and winning the titles back for another extensive reign.

2)The Diva’s Title achieving World Title status before the Women’s Title

3)Mike Adamdale winning various awards for best color commentator of all time.

  19. daruhaha Says:

I have a feeling that jeff hardy will get into this match somehow….

  20. kanadian Says:

I see why they are having the match. for whatever reason they think khali is still an unstoppable monster even after losing to a bunch of guys the last 8 months, and they want to make triple h look good. if they did something like this for punk (but with someone better than khali; i.e. JBL) maybe people would start cheering for him.

P.S. I’m not making excuses, I’m as pissed as everyone else.

It’s times like this that I’m reminded of something Lance Storm once said: “Well, I guess the Wellness Policy doesn’t extend to the Creative Department…”
